Meditation

This is the word which many people fear, mostly because they do not know what it means, or have an erroneous idea of what it means. The responses come in varieties such as "I can relax anytime I want", or "I'd be scared of being in a void and not thinking".

Neither of these are relevant in their limited perspective. Relaxation is a by-product of meditation and is caused by the practice, among other bio-medical results documented in scientific literature such as endorphin release in the body. The mind never really stops thinking, but it may be "parked" in the "garage" and just observed for the image processor of the human being it is. It will typically blabber on to tell you that you are important, separate, and feed your ego.... the illusion.

We are not the body, because it is always getting older by the minute/hour/day/week/month/year and as such is not real. We are also not the mind, because it is constantly changing and as such our memory of what we ate for a snack last Tuesday afternoon cannot be remembered.

So, what is real? Only what is unchangeable or immutable. The only reality is the conscious "I am" awareness when we wake from sleep and notice that hey, here I am again waking up in bed, the same as the young boy/girl, or now, man/woman...... it's the same but the body is looking older and thoughts are different.

And so we arrive at meditation, the practice of which clears the mind and enhances dream states of clarity and direction of purpose. The ultimate in meditation is to transcend the mind to self-realisation that all is only one, experientially, and see all symbols or things as they are, false, just a game. The bliss, love, joy, at home, and completion are then evident to you from within.

The statement "Everything Matters, but Nothing Really Does" will make sense only after transcendence of the mind, as all we see is coming from that same mind as an object, symbol, or thing. A more fitting way of putting it is to say Every Thing is made of matter, a construct of mind, polarity and relationship, but No Thing is what is really the matter of importance. As such, experiences are not explainable in words, which are mind/concept relational vibrations. the One has no other and just is.

Meditation requires a focus or one-pointedness of mind, so that it cannot blabber away on all and anything it wants, and so is tamed. A candle, mantra, breath, sound etc are all a type of focus. The ideal is to keep the awareness on the particular focus used, so that the mind gets the "check-mate" it cannot operate from, that it usually is allowed. When this occurs, the brainwaves go slower down through Alpha to Theta to Delta and you are in deep awareness of the inner self. Endorphins are  released into the body as the natural opiates, and you feel real real good.

Meditation is the freeway to enlightenment.  It helps us get in touch with the teacher or God within.  It opens us to higher energy sources and recharges body, mind and spirit.  Perception depends upon our energy level, and meditation is the way to keep energy at its highest.

Although positive changes are experienced immediately from meditation, many are gradual.  You will experience a reduction in stress and tension, an overall improvement in health, and feelings of peacefulness.  But meditation is not a wonder drug that relieves all ills overnight.  It begins to sensitize you to problems at hand and maintain your energy level, so you are better able to deal with whatever is facing you.  It gives you the eyes to see and the ears to hear, so you can see how you are getting out of life exactly what you feel you deserve - nothing more, nothing less!

A common method for anyone on the planet was introduced by Sai Baba, called the Jyothi meditation on the light. Use a candle flame to focus on. The guidance transcript for moving into this is available form Sai Centres all over the world.

An ancient Egyptian method and is one of the fastest and easiest.  Actually, there are two parts to the total process.  First is concentration, a directed mental effort that precedes meditation.  Concentration quiets the mind and consciously focuses it on something.  Second is meditation during which you relax your mental focus and allow a free-flowing reception.

Seven Steps.

This meditation technique requires about twenty minutes a day.  It is best to meditate when you are alert, rather than right after a big meal or when you are very tired.

You may find the early morning hours best, so that you can heighten your energy and orient in a positive way before beginning each day.  Or, you may rather meditate right before going to sleep.  This will help you clear out the clutter from the day and raise your energy so that you are more receptive to the teaching dreams you are given.  But any time is better than no time, and whatever best suits your personal schedule is what is best for you.  But it should be a time when it is quiet and you will not be disturbed, as loud noises can be quite jolting in the middle of meditation.  Before you begin you might spend a few minutes reading something inspirational, such as poetry, religious writings, or perhaps listening to uplifting music.  This will help you tune out of your everyday concerns and get ready to meditate.

1.

Sit in a straight back chair with spine erect, feet flat on the floor.  Your back should not be touching the chair.  Fold your hands together in your lap, or hold them in a prayer position.  Hands must be touching.  Eyes may be opened or closed.

2.

Take several slow deep breaths, and feel yourself relaxing.  Imagine a bright white light completely surrounding you, which is your protection as you open sensitive energy centers.

3.

Gently concentrate on a single idea, picture or word for about ten minutes.  Select something that suggests peace, beauty, or a spiritual ideal; or just listen to soft, soothing music.  If using music stay with the melody and words for the full 20 minutes.

4.

If your mind strays from your object of concentration, gently bring it back to your focal point. (Surprisingly soon you will find your ability to discipline the mind growing much stronger.) It takes 20 years to still the mind totally so do not get discouraged.  It works in spite of us.

5.

After 10 minutes separate your hands and turn them palms up in your lap.  Close your eyes if opened.

6.

Relax your hold on the concentration object, and shift your mind into neutral.  Remain passive yet alert for ten minutes.  Placidly observe any thoughts and images as they may come and go. Just be still, detached, and flow with whatever you are experiencing.

7.

After 10 minutes do your affirmations and visualizations as you are now at your most relaxed and centered time.  Then close your palms, and again imagine that you are surrounded by a white or gold light.  Now open your eyes.  The light sends love and healing out to others yet buffers their stress/tension from influencing you as you go about your daily activities.

I am used to using sound technology these days, plus silent sitting using industrial ear muffs. The tapes and CD's available are becoming more prolific in the world now, as science is entering self help as an aid to meditation. Stereo headphones allow the sound to address the left and right ears specifically as a brain-wave balancer making it easier than ever to meditate in the midst of a highly stressed world.
