The kabbalist Text of "Zohar" [the book of splendour] explains that our Dreams are both messages from God, as well as being reflections of our own psyches. Since we are individual reflections of God, albeit unrealised, this makes sense to me. As such then, Dreams are for our own self exploration. Kabbalists state that Dreams are in symbolic form, and that they should be discussed with learned people only, to avoid distortion. A Rabbi might suggest a fasting, to unravel a particular distressing Dream, as well as meditation. Dream Incubation was employed for dreams, in asking for further messages, in particular for portrayed illness.
This may have been the first leanings towards a form of Alchemy, as per Jane Anderson's book. Dream Incubation includes repeated affirmations and visualisations, and is aimed fairly and squarely at the sub-conscious mind. It is almost a fact that physical events such as illnesses, (perhaps all?) have to be first Dreamed, to bring the unmanifest to the manifest.
Although the Bible says that the "voice of God" was revealed to people through Dreams, later church policy frowned upon this. As Dream content can be very irreverent and symbolically embarrassing to "authority", it was decided to dis-empower people and class dreams as almost demonic and associated with the dark arts. History makes up rules to serve the matter at hand, although this may not have been all the fault of Jewish leaders of current times.
