The Ancient Greeks named ONEIROMANCY as their description for the interpretation of Dreams. This comes from the word oneiros and manteia which mean divination. This work was primarily done by Artemidorus of Daldis, who discriminated Dreams into [1] past and present Events, and [2] those concerned with the Future. He worked with both direct prophecy and indirect symbolic Dreams.
The Greeks thought that dreamers were in touch with the Gods. Hippocrates, Aristotle, and Galen all expressed the view that Dreams often contained physiological information of illnesses which were futured.
Greek healers taught that coloured Dreams (as opposed to normal black and white) were beneficial for balancing thinking with feelings, so that the body recovers during sleep and the person is able to cope with living easier.
The famous Oracle at Delphi was an important temple for the Greeks in interpreting Dreams. The visitor would be advised by the priests to fast for several days and purify their thinking, while focussing on their particular question. When this was complete, they were allowed a spot in the temple to sleep, and then related any dreams to the priests for interpretation. This is analogous to cultures of which their Shamans or Gurus would keep their "devotees" for many years in certain disciplines, before they were ready to start in meditation. Purification of the senses was considered paramount before getting tuned into the inherent multi-dimensionality.
