Fritz Perls

(1893 - 1970)

Fritz Perls was the "father" of what is generally known as Gestalt Therapy. In this therapy, the patient was not subjected to analysis from an objective point of view, but was more in a process of integrating their own internal duality. With dream imagery, the various symbols were "taken on" and experienced as having a life of their own as a role play which is acted out. In doing so, the patient got to express subconsciously in some cases what the symbol really meant to him/her, and if the scene was presented to a whole group of people, those people would also give input to the dreamer as extra feedback. He postulated that dream symbols may be classified into Personal, Archetypal, or Universal. Forums on dreaming get added richness by his methods, with many experienced individuals contributing to the "whole" of the original dream. It is today considered that group activity is much more conducive to spiritual movement than just an individual effort. this makes sense in that we would ultimately experience non-duality, that we are all really only one.
